TEXAS NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas (3-0) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's first regular-season NCAA Division I baseball poll of the 2003 season.

The defending national champion Longhorns won three straight to open the season at the University of San Diego by scores of 9-7, 17-4 and 7-2. Texas, which won six straight to close out the 2002 season enroute to its fifth national championship, has now won nine straight games dating back to last season.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

Poll Notes: Only eight of the top 30 teams in the poll this week have started their season. Two red-hot teams in the early going have been Cal. St. Fullerton and Arizona State. Fullerton swept a 3-game series against Stanford. It marked the first three-game sweep of Stanford since the 1997 season which lasted 77 regular season 3-game series. Arizona State moved up three spots from the pre-season poll ranking after starting the season with an 11-1 record. The Sun Devils swept Hawaii-Hilo six straight, won three from San Diego St. and then captured two of three from Long Beach St. Another team off to a solid start is Florida International (5-0).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
