TEXAS NO. 1 IN FINAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The University of Texas (57-15) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's final NCAA Division I baseball poll of the 2002 season.

Fresh from winning the College World Series with a 12-6 win in the championship game over South Carolina, the Longhorns rolled through its competition undefeated in winning four straight games. Texas won six straight contests to close out the season.

The national championship was the Longhorns' fifth (1949, 1950, 1975, 1983, 2002).

Texas freshman pitcher Huston Street set a College World Series record with four saves in the Longhorns' four games and converted 14 saves in 14 chances through the 2002 season. He was named MVP of the College World Series. Three weeks ago he was named a Louisville Slugger All-American.

Also of note was that Texas Head Coach Augie Garrido became the first skipper in history to win national championships in four different decades. He won three national titles at Cal. St. Fullerton (1979, 1984, 1995) as well as the 2002 championship at Texas.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
