STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Stanford University has been ranked
No. 1 for the sixth consecutive NCAA Division I baseball poll of the 2002 season by Collegiate
Baseball newspaper.
The Cardinal (12-4) has won four straight and six of
their last seven games. Stanford is hitting .347 as a team with 67 extra base hits and
averaging 8.9 runs a contest. The pitching staff has struck out 126 batters and walked 51
during those 16 games.
POLL NOTES: A number of other teams
are also on a roll. No. 2 Florida St., which top-ranked Stanford beat two of three several
weeks ago in Tallahassee, Fla., has now won five straight after beating sixth ranked
Florida two straight over the past weekend. Third ranked Clemson began the season with six
straight wins. Two of those victories were against No. 4 South Carolina over the past
weekend. One of the wins was a 10-inning thriller won by the Tigers, 11-10. East Carolina
has rocketed out of the gates with a perfect 10-0 record. Wake Forest (10-1) is in the
midst of a 9-game winning streak. Arizona (17-4) has put together a 6-game winning streak.
Another red-hot team is Houston. The Cougars beat Miami (Fla.), Cal. St. Fullerton and
Southern California over the past weekend in the Kia Baseball Bash to win it.
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | RHP Eric Brandon, Auburn: Brandon
became the first pitcher in school history to hurl a 9-inning perfect game as the Tigers
downed Murray State, 9-0. Brandon also became the first Southeastern Conference pitcher in
35 years to toss a 9-inning perfect game. He retired all 27 batters he faced as he struck
out a career-high 12 batters while throwing only 94 pitches.

 | LHP Jamie Rodrigue, Nebraska: Rodrigue
threw a 9-inning masterpiece as he only allowed one hit against Fresno State. The only hit
of the game was an infield single to Chris Patrick in the third inning before Rodrigue
retired 20 of the final 21 batters he faced. The Cornhusker pitcher also struck out five
batters.

 | OF Jeff Cook, Southern Mississippi:
Cook went 13-for-18 at the plate in four games last week as he belted three home runs
and knocked in 9 runs. For the week, he had 25 total bases and put together a 1.389
slugging percentage. He currently leads the team in hits, home runs, and RBIs.
