College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (March 25, 2002) CLEMSON NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — For the first time this season, Clemson (18-1) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. Florida State, ranked first the previous two polls, lost three straight games at the University of North Carolina and dropped to 11th this week. The Tar Heels, unranked last week, moved to 20th in the current poll with its impressive showing against the Seminoles. North Carolina has won nine straight and is 6-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference for the first time since 1990, the last year the Tar Heels won the conference title. It marked North Carolina's first ever 3-game sweep of Florida State. No. 1 Clemson has been sensational all season long. The Tigers have only one loss this season against South Alabama in a 6-4 setback. As a team, Clemson is hitting .351 and has belted 39 homers in 19 games. The pitching staff has a 3.40 ERA with nearly a 3:1 strikeout to walk ratio (157 strikeouts and 55 walks). POLL NOTES: Several other teams are also on a roll. Rice has won 11 straight and has rolled to a 23-4 overall record, the best start since the 1984 team started 24-4. Alabama's 21-3 record is the best start in school history. The 1983 and 1997 teams both opened the year with 21 wins in their first 24 games. Northwestern State has captured 18 of its last 19 games. NSU has not allowed an earned run in the last 21 innings and have only allowed eight hits in the last 20 innings. Richmond has won 19 of 21 games this season. Texas notched its fourth straight shutout with a 20-0 win over Texas-Pan American. It marked the first time in the history of Longhorn baseball that Texas pitching has recorded four straight shutouts wins. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
