College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 25, 2002) STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Stanford University has been ranked No. 1 for the fifth consecutive NCAA Division I baseball poll of the 2002 season by Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The Cardinal (9-4) won three of four games last week as Stanford beat Fresno St., 8-3, and took two of three from Santa Clara (winning 5-4, losing 13-9 and winning 8-7). The Cardinal is hitting .336 as a team with 50 extra base hits in 13 games and averaging 8.1 runs per contest. The pitching staff has struck out 104 batters and walked 46 during those 13 games. POLL NOTES: A number of teams are on a roll. Florida has won 10 in a row which is only one win away from the best start in school history. The Gators previously won 11 straight to kick off the 1989 season. Other winning streaks include: South Carolina (9), Rice (9), Texas (9), Alabama (8), and Stetson (8). Texas took a dramatic jump after winning nine straight as the Longhorns moved from 18th to ninth this week. Texas has scored in double digits six times this season while outscoring opponents by a 111-16 margin over its last nine contests. Meanwhile, the Longhorns' pitching staff has a 2.35 ERA with 93 strikeouts and only 28 walks. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
