STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Stanford University has been ranked No. 1 for the fourth consecutive NCAA Division I baseball poll of the 2002 season by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.

The Cardinal (6-3) won two of three games during the past week with a victory at home against Brigham Young, 8-1 and a split of two games at Fresno St. Stanford won the first game, 6-2 but lost the second tilt, 7-5. The final game of the 3-game series was rained out. Stanford is hitting .346 as a team through nine games with 37 extra base hits. The team is averaging 8.4 runs a game with a remarkable on-base percentage of .406. The pitching staff has struck out 77 batters and only walked 26 on the season.

POLL NOTES: The top three teams in the nation were only separated by three points. Florida St. swept highly regarded Arizona St. in Tallahassee, Fla. three straight over the past weekend as the Seminoles upped their season record to 10-3. The week prior, Florida St. dropped two of three to No. 1 Stanford. No. 3 Louisiana St. has rolled to a 6-1 record. Other hot teams across the nation in the top 30 include Florida (8 straight wins), Florida International (7 consecutive victories) and South Carolina (6 wins in a row). Three teams fell out of the poll this week in Southern California, San Diego and Arizona. Southern California is 2-5 on the season and was swept three straight in Los Angeles by Baylor over the past weekend. San Diego dropped the first two games of a series to U.C. Riverside, and Arizona was swept at Texas A&M three straight.

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
