STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Stanford University has been ranked
No. 1 for the third consecutive NCAA Division I baseball poll of the 2002 season by Collegiate
Baseball newspaper.
The Cardinal (4-2) beat No. 2 Florida St. two of three
games in Tallahassee, Fla. over the past weekend. Stanford won the first two games by
scores of 9-3 and 15-11. The Seminoles bounced back to take the third game, 7-6. The week
prior, the Cardinal knocked off 16th ranked Cal. St. Fullerton two of three.
Stanford is hitting .349 as a team and is averaging 9.5
runs a game. The Cardinal has cracked 26 extra base hits in only six contests.
POLL NOTES: Four teams have been
extremely hot to kick off the 2002 season. Arizona State is 7-0 after sweeping Tennessee
three straight at home. Surprising Arizona is 10-1 on the season. The Wildcat pitching
staff has been sensational with a 2.61 ERA through 11 games. The staff has struck out 85
batters and only walked 23. The University of San Diego has raced to a 9-0 record. It is
the best start in school history. Florida is 5-0 after winning two straight at defending
national champion Miami, Fla. The Gators are off to their best start since they went 7-0
to start the 1994 season.
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | RHP Frank Allen Yeilding, Samford: Yeilding
hurled a no-hitter in a 2-0, 7-inning win over VMI in his first appearance as an NCAA
Division I pitcher. He struck out 10 batters and allowed two walks. After the first
inning, he only faced 20 batters the rest of the way.

 | 2B Shaun Larkin, Cal. St.
Northridge: Larkin belted 4 homers and went 8-for-10 at the plate as he scored 9 runs,
walked 11 times and had a slugging percentage of 2.200. One week after blasting 4 homers
in his first three games as a Matador, the senior transfer from Texas Tech belted 4 more
to give him 8 on the year. Against Loyola Marymount last week, he was 2-for-4 with a
homer, double, three RBI, a walk and run scored. In a 3-game series over the past weekend
against Washington State, he hit three more homers and reached base safely in all 16 of
his plate appearances (6 hits, 10 walks).
