College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 14, 2001) SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — For the first time this season, Southern California (35-16) has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Trojans, which have won 6 straight, lead the Pac-10 Conference with a 15-5 mark. USC jumped to the No. 1 position after previously top-ranked Cal. St. Fullerton lost three times last week (once to UCLA and twice to U.C. Santa Barbara). The Titans slipped from first to sixth in this week's poll after the 1-3 week with its only win coming against U.C. Santa Barbara. POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red hot. Miami, Fla. continues to rise in the poll after winning five straight as the Hurricanes moved from fourth to second this week. Clemson has won five in a row, Pepperdine 7 consecutive and Central Florida nine straight. Rutgers, ranked earlier this year, re-enters the poll at No. 30 with a 7-game winning streak and 40-13 overall record. One team which has taken a nose dive is Stetson. The Hatters fell out of the poll after losing their sixth straight game this week. Only two weeks ago, Stetson was ranked 8th in the nation with a glistening 40-6 record. Since that time, the Hatters have posted a 1-7 record. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
