STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Stanford University (27-7) has been
ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball
poll. The Cardinal, which has won 13 of their last 15 games, knocked off UCLA two of three
games over the past weekend. Stanford also sits on top of the Pac-10 Conference with a 7-2
record.
The Cardinal has a superb team ERA of 2.76. As a staff,
Stanford pitchers have a better than 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio (267 strikeouts and 111
walks). The pitching staff has only allowed 13 homers in 34 games. Defense has been superb
all season. In the first NCAA national statistics released last week, the Cardinal ranked
first in the nation with a .980 team fielding percentage.
Rice, ranked No. 1 in the previous poll, posted a 2-3
week and fell from first to eighth. Losses were to Sam Houston St. and twice to San Jose
St. with wins against Texas A&M and San Jose St.
POLL NOTES: Several teams have been
red hot. Cal. St. Fullerton continues to roll with eight straight wins and victories in 14
of its last 16 contests. Winthrop has won 12 straight. Florida is back in the poll this
week after picking up 14 consecutive wins. Oral Roberts has also been superb with 10
straight wins. Teams which have struggled include Clemson (0-4 last week), The Citadel
(1-3), Arizona State (7 losses in last 10 games) and Rutgers (3-3).
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | RHP John Connally Barnett, Florida
Southern: Barnett pitched the first perfect game in Florida Southern history in a 6-0
win over Florida Tech. He struck out a career-high 17 batters in the 9-inning victory. The
Panthers never came close to getting a hit as only 10 balls were put in play and four left
the infield.

 | RHP Jamar Rodgers, Alcorn State: Rodgers
pitched a 7-inning perfect game in a 9-0 win over Alabama A&M. The righthander
recorded seven strikeouts and only threw 78 pitches in the contest.

 | RHP Kirk Saarloos, Cal. St.
Fullerton: Saarloos hurled the third no-hitter in Titan history in a 28-0 win over
Pacific. He walked just one and tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in 9 innings. He
walked and hit a batter in the second inning but retired the next 22 batters before an
error stopped the streak in the ninth.

 | 1B Jesse Gutierrez, St. Mary's (Tex.): Gutierrez
belted 6 home runs in five games last week as he was 10-for-15 at the plate. He also hit a
double, walked three times and was hit by two pitches. His best game of the week came
against Incarnate Word as he went 3-for-3 with 3 HR and 7 RBI. |
