College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (April 23, 2001) NOTRE DAME NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — For the first time in history, Notre Dame has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Irish (35-5-1) have won 14 consecutive games and 19 of their last 20. The winning streak is the longest since 1991 when Notre Dame won 18 straight. The Irish lead the nation with a team ERA of 2.52. In the last 20 games, the team batting average has been .354. Four of Notre Dame's losses have been by one run. Stanford, ranked No. 1 last week, slipped to second after losing two of three against Southern California over the past weekend in Los Angeles. The Cardinal still leads the Pac-10 Conference with a record of 11-4. POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red hot. Cal. St. Fullerton has won 16 of its last 17 games. Pepperdine has won 11 straight. Auburn, which lost 9 straight Southeastern Conference games to begin the conference season, has now won 11 of its last 12 SEC contests. Another hot team is Purdue which has won 18 of its last 20. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
