College Baseball Poll - Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: Monday
(April 2, 2001)
RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University (28-6) has been
ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball
poll.
The Owls, which have won six straight games and 10 of
their last 11, edged last week's No. 1 team Stanford by one point. The Cardinal was 3-1
last week with its only loss coming against Arizona State. Stanford, however, won two of
three in the 3-game series. Rice is running away with the Western Athletic Conference with
a 17-1 record. Both of the Owls' overall and conference records are the best in school
history at this stage of the season.
POLL NOTES: The
past week was a turbulent one for teams ranked in the poll. Five top 10 teams from the
previous week suffered three losses last week in Arizona St., Miami (Fla.), Tennessee
(3-game sweep by Auburn), South Carolina (3-game sweep by Alabama) and South Alabama
(3-game sweep by Florida International). As a result, each fell in the poll this week.
Cal. St. Fullerton swept a 3-game series at Miami (Fla.). It marked the first time Miami
had been swept in a 3-game series at Mark Light Stadium since 1973. Virginia Commonwealth
extended its home winning streak to 21 games which dates back to last season. Texas
(24-12) has won 11 of its last 12 games, including a season-best nine in a row.
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.
