STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Stanford University (31-7) has been
ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball
poll.
The Cardinal, which has won six in a row and 17 of their
last 19 games, swept a 3-game series against Oregon State over the past weekend. Stanford
leads the Pac-10 Conference with a 10-2 record.
The Cardinal is second in the nation with a .978 team
fielding percentage, according to last week's NCAA statistics. The pitching staff has a
superb 2.99 team ERA and has a better than 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio (298 strikeouts and
123 walks).
POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red hot. Oral
Roberts has won 13 straight games, Cal. St. Fullerton 12 in a row, Notre Dame 10 straight
and Long Beach St. has won 11 of its last 12. Texas Tech. has now won eight in a row with
Pepperdine posting six consecutive wins. Teams that have had a rough go of it lately
include Baylor (4 straight losses), South Alabama (2-3), Alabama (1-4), and Florida (1-3).
Alabama and Florida fell out of the poll this week.
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | RHP Mike Negen, Southwest State: Negen
hurled the fifth no-hitter in school history in a 7-inning, 19-1 win over
Minnesota-Morris. Negen struck out 9 batters and walked only one in the contest.

 | LHP Justin Blood, Franklin Pierce: Blood
set a school record and came within one of the NCAA Division II record as he struck out 20
New Hampshire batters in an 8-2 win. Blood worked 8 innings before a high pitch count
(over 150) forced him to yield to the bullpen for the final inning. He struck out the side
four times.

 | RHP Pat Neshek, Butler: Neshek
set a school single-game record with 18 strikeouts in leading Butler to a 4-1 win over
Detroit. He had at least one strikeout in every inning and struck out the side in the
seventh and eighth innings. Eight of Detroit's final nine outs were via strikeouts.

 | 1B Vito Chiaravalloti, Richmond: Chiaravalloti
homered four times in a 3-game series against East Carolina and has now belted six in his
last five games and 11 in his last 12 contests.

 | C Erik Shafer, Saint Leo: Shafer had a remarkable
week as he belted 5 home runs in 4 games with 21 RBI as he went 10-for-17 at the plate. In
one game against Eckerd, he cracked 3 homers, including a grand slam, in a 21-4 win.
Amazingly, he hit a home run from each side of the plate in the same inning in that game.
In a doubleheader against Eckerd, he belted 4 homers with 16 RBI. |
