RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University remained No. 1 in
the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll after
posting a 3-1 week.
The Owls lost at Texas, 7-4 but rebounded with a 3-game
sweep of San Jose St. Rice, which is 21-5 on the season, is off to its best start since
going 24-5 to begin the 1999 season. Nine of the Owls' 21 wins have been against teams
ranked in the pre-season. Pitching has been superb all season for Rice as the Owls sport a
2.67 team ERA.
POLL NOTES: Several teams have been
red-hot. South Alabama has won 10 straight. Florida State has picked up wins in 15 of its
last 16 games. Virginia Commonwealth has won 14 consecutive contests. The Citadel has won
14 of its last 15 games. Notre Dame's 13-2-1 start is the best by an Irish team since the
1958 ball club began 14-2. Tennessee is off to its best start since 1951 with a 20-3
record. Over the past weekend, the Volunteers knocked off South Carolina two of three
games. South Alabama is off to a 22-3 start, its best beginning since the 1975 team
started 36-1. In an unusual development, six teams fell out of the poll this week
including Auburn (6 straight loses), Mississippi St. (2-2 last week), Georgia (2-3),
Southern Mississippi (1-3), Rutgers (2-2), and North Carolina (1-3).
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

 | RHP Mark Prior, Southern
California: Prior struck out 14 batters against Washington in a 5-1 win as he threw a
2-hitter in a 9-inning complete game. He did not walk a batter. The 14 strikeouts were a
career high.

 | RHP Donovan Martin, Western Oregon:
Martin hurled the first no-hitter for Western Oregon since the 1993 season as he
posted a 7-0 win over Eastern Oregon in a 7-inning contest. He struck out nine batters and
did not allow a runner past second base. He walked three batters and hit one.

 | OF Mike Quintana, Florida
International: Quintana hit 4 home runs and knocked in 10 RBIs in a 3-game series
against Louisiana Tech. In his last 10 games, he has cracked 8 home runs with 21 RBI.

 | OF Justin McCarty, Wichita State: McCarty belted 4
home runs and knocked in 13 runs for the Shockers in five games last week. He was
13-for-25 at the plate with 2 doubles and scored 6 runs. |
