RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. In one of the strangest polling
weeks in history, four top 10 teams fell substantially in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA
Division I baseball poll after losing at least three games as Rice (18-4) took over the
No. 1 slot. Rice has won five of its last six games and sits at 8-1 in the Western
Athletic Conference.
Previously No. 1 ranked Georgia Tech. lost three of four
games last week with a setback to Auburn early in the week and two more losses to North
Carolina St. in a 3-game series.
Previously No. 2 ranked Louisiana St. lost four of five
games last week, including two of three to Georgia and one to Tulane and Southern.
Southern California has lost four straight games, including three straight to Stanford
over the past weekend. Auburn, which began the week with a glistening 14-1 record, was
knocked off three straight times by Mississippi St. The Bulldogs (9-5) are ranked 21st
this week.
POLL NOTES: Outside of the strange
week with top 10 teams, other ball clubs have been hot. Stanford has won 16 of its last 18
games. Florida St. has won 11 straight while Nebraska and Central Florida have won 10 in a
row. Cal. St. Fullerton has won five of its last six games.
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | LHP Tom Lipari, New Orleans: Lipari
threw a 9-inning no-hitter against Southern Mississippi, the first 9-inning no-no in
school history, in a 3-0 victory. He faced 31 batters and threw 131 pitches in the game
with four strikeouts and five walks.

 | RHP Wes Kolle, Texas Lutheran: Kolle
hurled the 10th no-hitter in school history as he paced the Bulldogs to a 9-0 win over
Mississippi College. In nine innings, he struck out three and walked one. Kolle's
accomplishment is the first no-hitter at Texas Lutheran since the 1999 season.

 | RHP Chris Cochran, James Madison: Cochran
tossed a 7-inning no-hitter to lead James Madison to a 5-0 win over St. John's. Cochran
walked the third batter he faced before retiring the next 18 batters in order. He threw 82
pitches to register the eighth no-hitter in JMU history. Cochran struck out 6 and faced
just two batters over the minimum.

 | 1B Andy Jarvis, Oregon St.: Jarvis belted 5 home
runs last week in 5 games with 13 RBI, 2 doubles and 8 runs scored against rivals
Washington and Washington St. He tied a school record as he belted 3 homers in one game
against Washington St. He hit .478 (11-for-23) on the week. |
