College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 26, 2001) GEORGIA TECH. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Georgia Tech. (7-1) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll. Rice (13-2), ranked No. 1 the previous two polls, slipped to second after losing to Houston, 14-5 during the past week. However, the Owls rebounded with three straight victories over Hawaii-Hilo over the past weekend. Georgia Tech., the top-ranked team in the Collegiate Baseball pre-season poll, has won six straight games. Tech's lone loss was a 5-4 decision decided in the bottom of the ninth at Rice. Georgia Tech is batting .398 and averaging 12.5 runs per game. The Yellow Jackets suffered a huge blow last Friday when All-American 3B Mark Teixeira suffered a broken right ankle in Tech's 18-7 win over Elon. He suffered the injury during an outfield collision as leftfielder Matthew Boggs and shortstop Victor Menocal converged on a shallow pop fly to leftfield along with Teixeira. Menocal caught the ball, but Teixeira tumbled over Boggs as Boggs dove for the ball. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday and is expected to be out six to eight weeks. Teixeira was batting .500 with 4 HR and 12 RBI. POLL NOTES: Several other ball clubs have been hot. Auburn (13-0), South Carolina (12-0) and East Carolina (10-0) remain unbeaten. Louisiana St. has won seven straight, Stetson nine in a row and Southern Mississippi eight consecutive. Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Louisiana-Monroe, Wichita St., Florida, and Mississippi St. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
