College Baseball Poll - Collegiate
Baseball Newspaper
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb.
19, 2001)
RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL
TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University has been ranked No.
1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll. The Owls (10-1) feature six
wins against ranked opponents. It marks the second consecutive week Rice has been at the
top of the Collegiate Baseball poll.
During the past week, the Owls beat Houston, 5-2, lost
to Purdue, 5-2 and then beat Wake Forest, 3-2 and Central Florida, 5-1. Dominant pitching
continues to be the story of Rice's early season success. The team ERA is a remarkable
1.27 through 11 games and four pitchers have yet to give up an earned run. The top four
teams in the nation remain unchanged from a week ago as Rice is No. 1 followed by Georgia
Tech., Southern California and Louisiana St.
POLL NOTES: Several ball clubs
outside of Rice have been sizzling hot. Auburn is unbeaten (10-0) as is South Carolina
(9-0). Louisiana-Monroe (7-0) knocked off highly regarded LSU last week as the Indians
remain unbeaten. The 7-0 start is the team's best since 1966 when the school began the
year at 9-0. Six starters are hitting .400 or higher after seven games. Another team that
has been hot is South Alabama (8-1). Its only loss was to 7th ranked Auburn, 4-3 in 10
innings. Another unbeaten team is East Carolina (6-0). Two teams fell out of the poll this
week in Evansville (2-1) and Wake Forest (4-2).
The Collegiate Baseball
Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during
the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S"
NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
 | RHP Wes Self, Davidson: In
Davidson's season opener, Self threw a 9-inning no-hitter against High Point in a 4-0 win.
He struck out 11 while walking just three. The no-hitter was the first at Davidson since
1986. But that no-no was a 7-inning affair. Self's is the first recorded 9-inning
no-hitter in Davidson history.
|
 | RHP Kirk Saarloos, Cal. St.
Fullerton: Saarloos came within a whisker of pitching a perfect game for the Titans
against Brigham Young in a 5-0 win. He retired the first 23 batters he faced before Kainoa
Obrey blooped a single to right field with two outs in the eighth inning. That was the
only baserunner for the Cougars as Saarloos struck out 11 and only needed 87 pitches in
the 9-inning performance.
|
 | RF Brian Stavisky, Notre Dame: Stavisky reached
base 10 consecutive times in the first three games of the year for the Irish as he went
9-for-13 with 15 total bases. He also had 3 walks, 3 runs scored, 2 triples, 2 doubles and
a stolen base. |
