College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) RICE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Rice University has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll. The Owls (7-0) have been superb in the early going of the season with wins over previously No. 1 ranked Georgia Tech., 5-4, another victory over previously No. 4 ranked Nebraska, 16-2 as well as wins over 18th ranked Baylor, Texas and Texas Tech. It is a brutal schedule to kick off the season for Rice, but the Owls are off to their best start since they opened 14-0 in 1993. The Rice pitching staff has a remarkable 1.27 ERA with four pitchers having 0.00 ERAs. The staff has struck out 67 batters in 64 innings. Georgia Tech. (2-1), ranked No. 1 last week, slipped to No. 2 by only one point in the power index ratings. POLL NOTES: Several ball clubs outside of Rice have been red hot. Arizona State, which lost its first game of the season to Texas-Arlington, has since won eight straight. South Carolina is 6-0 to start the year as is Auburn and Pepperdine. Tulane has jumped out of the gates with a 7-0 record and made the top 30 this week at the No. 27 position. The only team to drop out of the poll this week was Oklahoma (2-4) which dropped three straight at Alabama. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
