College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (June 5, 2000) STANFORD NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Two huge upsets took place during the super regionals over the past weekend as No. 1 Georgia Tech. and No. 2 South Carolina went down to defeat. In this week's poll, Stanford (47-15) has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll after winning its super regional over Nebraska two games to one. It marks the second time this season the Cardinal has been ranked No. 1. Stanford was at the top of the list in the Collegiate Baseball pre-season poll. The biggest surprise of the super regionals was Louisiana-Lafayette knocking off the Gamecocks two games to one. The Ragin' Cajuns did something no team had done this season against the Gamecocks by beating them two straight in Columbia, S.C. at Sarge Frye Field. Entering the super regional, South Carolina was the winningest team in the nation with a 55-8 record and had set a school record for victories. Louisiana-Lafayette will be making its first appearance in the College World Series this week. Georgia Tech., ranked No. 1 in the last poll, also went down to defeat at home against Southern California. The Trojans swept the Yellow Jackets two straight as USC earned its 20th trip to the College World Series. At one stage in the two contests, Trojan pitching did not allow a run to score in 15 consecutive innings. POLL NOTES: The longest winning streak in the nation at this juncture belongs to Southern California with 15 straight wins. The 15 consecutive victories are the most since 1998. LSU is next with 9 straight wins. Another surprise team that will be making its first trip to the College World Series is San Jose St. which knocked off Houston two games to one at its super regional. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
