College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 22, 2000) GEORGIA TECH. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Georgia Tech. (47-14) has been ranked No. 1 in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll for the first time this season after winning nine of its last 10 games. The Yellow Jackets, Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season champion with an 18-6 record, captured the ACC tournament over the past weekend with a 5-0 record. Georgia Tech. became the first team to win both the ACC regular season title and tournament championship in the same year since Clemson accomplished the feat in 1994. South Carolina, which had been No. 1 the previous five weeks, fell to third after losing twice at the Southeastern Conference tournament. The Gamecocks have posted a 6-4 record in their last 10 games despite posting a glistening 52-8 overall record. POLL NOTES: Three teams fell out of the top 30 this week, including Fresno St. (1-2), New Orleans (2-2) and Florida Atlantic (1-2). Teams which have been on a roll lately include Southern California (10 consecutive wins), Rice (winners of 17 of its last 18) and Oral Roberts (21 wins in last 22 contests). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
