College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 1, 2000) SOUTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. South Carolina (45-4) has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll for the third consecutive week. The Gamecocks, winners of 20 straight, swept its fifth straight Southeastern Conference opponent in defeating Georgia three consecutive times over the past weekend. The Gamecocks have also strung together 16 straight SEC wins which set a new conference record. South Carolina's 20 consecutive overall wins is two off the school record of 22 which was set earlier this year, and the team has belted 85 home runs in 49 games. POLL NOTES: Six teams fell out of the top 30 which were ranked last week in Oklahoma (1-3), Long Beach St. (1-3), Georgia (0-4), Fresno St. (1-3), Notre Dame (4-2) and Old Dominion (0-1). Teams on a roll now, outside of South Carolina, include Baylor (6 consecutive wins), Georgia Tech. (19 wins in last 21 games), and Nebraska (swept 4th straight Big 12 Conference series with three consecutive wins over Iowa St.). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
