College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (April 24, 2000) SOUTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — South Carolina (41-4) has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll for the second consecutive week. The Gamecocks, winners of 16 straight, swept a 3-game series against Kentucky over the past weekend and now have swept four straight Southeastern Conference opponents (12 straight SEC victories). In a doubleheader against Kentucky over the weekend, South Carolina hit 10 home runs and banged out 31 hits while scoring 26 runs. In the 3-game series, the Gamecocks hit 12 home runs and collected 50 hits and scored 44 runs in 15-5, 11-10 and 18-6 victories over the Wildcats. POLL NOTES: Five teams fell out of the top 30 which were ranked last week. East Carolina (1-4), Wichita St. (3-2), Illinois (5 straight losses), Tulane (2-2) and Florida Atlantic (1-2) all dropped out of the poll. Red-hot teams outside of South Carolina (16 straight wins), include Nebraska (13 consecutive victories), Rutgers (24 wins in last 25 contests), Oklahoma (14 wins in last 15 games), Old Dominion (8 consecutive victories), and Notre Dame (7 straight wins). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
