College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (April 17, 2000) SOUTH CAROLINA NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. South Carolina (36-4) has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper NCAA Division I baseball poll for the first time this season. The Gamecocks, winners of 11 straight, swept a 3-game series against Vanderbilt over the past weekend and beat Clemson earlier in the week, 6-3. South Carolina (15-3 in the Southeastern Conference) has swept three consecutive SEC foes in Alabama, Mississippi State and now Vanderbilt. Previously No. 1 ranked Florida State slipped to second after losing two of three at Miami, Fla. over the weekend. POLL NOTES: Five teams fell out of the top 30 which were ranked last week. Louisiana-Lafayette (30-8) has gone into a tailspin lately with six losses in its last seven games, including four consecutive setbacks. Other teams which fell out include Creighton (1-3), Stetson (1-3), Florida (2-2) and San Jose St. (1-3). Winning streaks of note include Georgia Tech. (12 straight) and Nebraska (8 in a row). Two other red-hot teams include Baylor (winners of 11 out of its last 12) and Wichita State (winners in 9 of its last 10 contests). The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
