College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 28, 2000) FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. Florida St. has been ranked No. 1 for the third consecutive week in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles have won seven straight and nine of their last 10. Florida St. is averaging 9.1 runs per game and has cracked 23 homers in 15 games. Eight different players have hit home runs for the Seminoles. As far as pitching, FSU's staff has struck out 136 batters (average 9 per game) while walking only 66. Florida St. knocked off the University of Florida this past weekend in Tallahassee, 6-2 and 8-7. Coupled with two wins at Florida in Gainesville the week prior (15-6, 17-8), it marked the first 4-game sweep of Florida by the Seminoles since 1993. POLL NOTES: Seven teams fell out of the top 30 this week, including Tulane (0-4), Rice (1-3), Texas Tech. (2-2), Florida (1-2), Florida International (1-2), Louisiana-Monroe (1-1) and Virginia Commonwealth (1-2). Texas (13-3) recorded its fourth shutout of the season when the Longhorns blanked Iowa St. 4-0 over the weekend. It is the most since 1994 when Texas had five. Fifth ranked Houston swept a 3-game series against LSU in Baton Rouge over the weekend. In four games last week, the Cougars scored 45 runs and hit .358 with 8 homers, including two grand slams. LSU, which has now lost five straight games, dropped from third in the nation seven days ago to 15th this week. Kentucky, making its first appearance in the poll this year, is 10-0 and off to its best start in Head Coach Keith Madison's 22 years at the school. Long Beach St. swept Arkansas 3 straight in Fayetteville which was the first non-conference sweep by an opponent in Razorback history at home. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
