College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 21, 2000) FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. has been ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive week in the Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles only played two games last week but were impressive as they pounded the University of Florida, 15-6 and 17-8 in games played at Gainesville, Fla. Florida St. is averaging 9.7 runs per game and has cracked 21 homers in 11 games. Eight different players have hit home runs for the Seminoles. As far as pitching, FSU has struck out 100 batters while walking only 49. POLL NOTES: Four teams fell out of the poll this week in Minnesota (3-3), Nevada (8-5), South Alabama (1-2) and Loyola Marymount (5-3). Two teams which took dramatic dives in the poll this week were UCLA (2nd to 15th) and Texas Tech. (16th to 26th). Both teams have now lost four straight games. As far as win streaks, Florida International has won 12 consecutive games to kick off the season. North Carolina has won nine in a row. South Carolina and Fresno St. have each won eight straight. Louisiana-Monroe's 10-1 start is its best since 1966 when the team started 12-1. The pitching staff has a 1.89 ERA. Virginia Commonwealth (8-1) is off to its best start since the 1991 season. VCU has outscored opponents 101-37. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
