College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (April 12, 1999)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida St. University has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles beat Clemson two of three games over the past weekend and have won 22 of their last 23 games in rolling to a 36-4 overall record (14-1 Atlantic Coast Conference mark).

The Seminoles have been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball poll eight of the last nine weeks. Florida St. is averaging 8.9 runs per game with a .335 batting average and team ERA of 2.76. The strikeout to walk ratio is superb with 402 strikeouts and only 147 walks.

POLL NOTES: Several other teams have been red-hot. The longest winning streak of top 30 teams is Florida Atlantic with 33 straight, one short of the NCAA Division I record of 34 set by Texas during the 1977 season. FAU's next game is at Jacksonville University this Friday. The last time Florida Atlantic (39-1) lost was a 3-1 setback at Miami, Fla. on Feb. 17. It was FAU's only game this season against a ranked opponent. Several other hot teams include Minnesota (18 wins in last 19 contests), Ohio State (15 wins in 16 games), S.W. Missouri St. (11 straight victories) and Texas Tech. (8 consecutive wins).

The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

3B Jeff Haase, Cleveland St.: Haase blasted 4 home runs and accounted for 14 RBIs in a 28-10 win over Youngstown State. Haase's RBI feat equalled the NCAA single-game mark set by Jim LaFountain of Louisville against Western Kentucky during the 1976 season. Seven of the RBI came off a pair of home runs in the sixth inning — one a grand slam. That single-inning performance tied 4 others for the second-best ever in NCAA Division I history. Both the 4 home runs and 14 RBI established CSU single-game records.

SS David Trexler, Catawba: Trexler hit 8 home runs in a 4-game span with 18 RBI as he hit .600 (12-for-20) with 12 runs scored. He added a double for a 1.850 slugging percentage for the week.

1B Jonathan Carey, Anderson: Carey belted 6 home runs in six games with 12 RBI. He posted a 1.722 slugging percentage and a .720 on-base percentage as he also drew seven walks.

OF Bill McCarthy, Radford: McCarthy recorded 12 consecutive hits — two short of the national record of 14 set by Gonzaga's Larry Patterson in 1977. He collected 16 hits in 19 official at-bats and reached base in 22 of his 25 trips to the plate for the week.
