College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday (March 1, 1999)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida State has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles (13-2) were 1-1 last week after splitting two games against the University of Florida (ranked sixth). Florida State lost the first game in Gainvesville, 4-2 but came back to win the next game, 8-4. This marks the third consecutive week the Seminoles have been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll. FSU has outscored opponents 152 to 42 in 15 games and has a 2.62 ERA.

POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red-hot. Florida International has raced to a 15-0 start, the best in school history. Other teams on a roll include North Carolina (10-0, the best start in school history), Baylor (10 straight wins), Miami, Fla. (9 consecutive victories), Texas A&M (9 in a row), and Arkansas (8 straight). Two teams which took a tumble in the poll this week include Hawaii (three straight losses at Texas Christian) and Clemson (three losses last week). Texas, which was swept three straight at Miami, Fla., dropped from third to 10th this week.   

The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

1B/DH Macky Waguespack, Southeastern Louisiana: In less than 24 hours, Waguespack hit six home runs over a 3-game span. The festivities began with a 2-run homer against Northwestern during a game last Friday evening. The next day during the first game of a doubleheader, the talented Lion hitter belted two home runs. In the final game of the day, he cracked three more to bring his total to six homers. During the trio of games, he collected seven hits (six being homers), one double, 11 RBIs, 26 total bases and posted a slugging percentage of 2.167.

RHP/OF Craig House, Memphis: House hurled a 2-hit complete game shutout against West Virginia. He faced one batter over the minimum and struck out a career-high 13 and did not walk a batter. On offense, he hit .500 (6-for-12) with two doubles, 3 runs and 4 RBI. He hit safely in all four games of the Service Academies Classic and was named to the All-Tournament team.

1B/RHP Taggert Bozied, San Francisco: Bozied performed a rarity when he belted four home runs in one game against Sonoma State in an 18-9 victory to set a new school record. On the week, he hit five homers in five games, scored nine runs and collected 11 RBI. He also was hit by three pitches, walked three times and had a pair of stolen bases. As a pitcher, he gave up just one hit and one run in three innings of work.
