WICHITA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Wichita State has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's first regular-season poll of the 1999 season. The Shockers, ranked No. 1 in the pre-season poll (released last December), begin their season with a 3-game series at Hawaii-Hilo next Saturday (Feb. 13). Wichita State finished with a gaudy 56-7 record last season and returns six position player starters.

Wichita State led the nation with a .369 team batting average, was No. 1 in scoring (12.06 runs per game), No. 1 in doubles hit (202), and fourth in total number of home runs hit (124). The Shockers also return a deep and talented pitching staff.

POLL NOTES: Defending national champion Southern California (1-3), was swept in a 3-game series at Texas (5-0) over the past weekend as the Longhorns won, 5-3, 9-8 and 8-7. It marked Texas' first non-conference sweep since taking a 3-game set from Miami in 1997 and also handed USC its first non-conference sweep since dropping three straight at Hawaii in 1993.

Florida State (6-0) swept Arizona State three straight. It marked the first 3-game sweep of the Sun Devils (11-3) by the Seminoles since the 1994 series in Tallahassee, Fla. Three other red-hot teams include Arizona (9-0), Hawaii (8-1) and Pepperdine (5-0).

The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
