For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 22, 1999)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida State has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles (12-1) were 3-1 last week after two wins over Charleston Southern (12-2 and 7-2) and a split with Florida (6-5 loss and 12-3 win). Florida St. has outscored opponents 142-37 in 13 games. Its pitching staff has a 2.46 ERA with 130 strikeouts and only 51 walks.

POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red-hot. Florida International has raced to a 12-0 start, the best in school history. Other teams on a roll include Stanford (9 straight wins), Cal. St. Fullerton (7 consecutive), Miami, Fla. (6 in row), and North Carolina (6 straight). Three teams dropped out of the top 30. Defending national champion Southern California (4-8) lost three of four last week. No. 15 Arizona (14-4) dropped out after losing four of its last five. No. 29 UCLA (6-7) dropped out after losing three of five. Last week's No. 2 team, Wichita St., was swept by Hawaii in Honolulu over the past weekend by scores of 4-2, 4-3 (10) and 9-1. The Shockers dropped to 16th this week while the Rainbows climbed from 25th to 14th. Hawaii, winners of five straight, have already swept UCLA and California this season. The Rainbows have a glistening 1.79 team ERA after 15 games.

The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP B.R. Cook, Oregon State: Cook threw a 1-hitter against Oklahoma State in a 1-0 victory in the San Diego Classic. He struck out five and walked just one in the contest. Cook allowed only two baserunners and threw 105 pitches in the 9-inning contest as he retired the first 14 hitters he faced. To end the game, he retired the final 10 OSU hitters.
2B/3B Mark Ernster, Arizona State: Ernster went 11-for-15 against Brigham Young in a 3-game series with 11 RBI and 5 runs scored. He collected two homers and a double and was perfect in the field on defense. In one game against the Cougars, Ernster was 6-for-6 which marked the first time since 1978 a Sun Devil has recorded such an accomplishment. That year Hubie Brooks posted a 6-for-6 game.
INF Ryan Owens, Cal. St. Fullerton: In four road games (1 at Southern California and 3 at UNLV), Owens collected 17 RBI with 3 home runs (which included a grand slam) and 4 doubles as he hit .524 (11-for-21). For good measure, he also swiped two bases during this memorable 4-game span.
