College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday (Feb. 15, 1999)

FLORIDA ST. NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Florida State has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Seminoles (9-0) pounded Troy State in their only games of the week, 17-3, 21-1 and 10-2. FSU is hitting .357 as a team and has outscored opponents 106-24. The team ERA is 2.33 with a strikeout to walk ratio of better than 3:1 (94 strikeouts and 30 walks). Last week's No. 1 team, Wichita State (3-1) slipped to second after losing one of four games against Hawaii-Hilo.

POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red-hot. Texas has bolted to No. 5 in the nation with a 7-2 overall record after sweeping defending national champion Southern California three straight two weekends ago and then taking two of three at perennial powerhouse Louisiana State over the past weekend. The Longhorns jumped from 17th to fifth in this week's poll. Arizona has been another hot team. The Wildcats (13-1) are ranked 15th in the nation. Over the past weekend, Arizona took two of three from Texas A&M. Two other teams which have rang up impressive records include Florida International (8-0) and Pepperdine (9-0). Oral Roberts (4-1) has stolen 38 bases in five games (average 7.6 per game).

The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

LHP Foye Minton, East Carolina: Minton hurled the first no-hitter since 1989 when he tossed a 9-inning no-no against North Carolina St. in the Winn-Dixie Shotout. Minton faced just one batter over the minimum while fanning seven and walking one. He recorded 15 ground outs in the 8-0 victory.
