The University of Southern California has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's final NCAA Division I baseball poll of the season after capturing the College World Series with a 21-14 victory over Arizona State. The Trojans pounded out 23 hits, including a championship-game record 5 homers. USC lost its opener in the College World Series, 12-10 to Louisiana State but stormed back to win five straight in winning its 12th national championship in baseball. The Trojans set College World Series records for team batting average (.378), runs scored (62), hits (88) and tied a CWS record with 17 home runs in the tournament (along with Louisiana State). The championship also marked the first time since 1980 (Arizona) that a team had lost its first game of the tournament but came back to win it all. The No. 1 ranking for USC is its first all season. The Trojans finished second in the Pac-10 Southern Division to Stanford but finished the season in high style by winning the East Regional and then capturing the College World Series. Stanford was ranked No. 1 nine times this season while Miami (Fla.) held the top position eight times. The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll.
