College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: May 4, 1998

STANFORD RANKED NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. - Stanford has been ranked No. 1 in "Collegiate Baseball's" latest NCAA Division I baseball poll with a 40-8-1 overall record. Previous top ranked Miami (Fla.), which had been ranked No. 1 for the past six weeks, slipped to second after losing two of three games to Florida State. The Cardinal, which has won five straight and 9 of their last 10 games, swept highly regarded Arizona State over the past weekend by scores of 5-4, 4-3 and 12-8. Stanford leads the Pac-10 Southern Division with a 21-6 record.

POLL NOTES: Several other teams have been red-hot. Cal. St. Fullerton has won 14 straight contests. Southern California has won 8 of its last 9. Minnesota has won 9 straight. Mississippi State won two of three over previously No. 3 ranked South Carolina. Two teams which fell out of the poll this week include Oregon State (1-3 last week) and Arkansas (2-2).

The "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

* RHP Brian Rogers, The Citadel: As MVP of the Southern Conference Tournament, he struck out 17 batters and allowed no runs in 13 total innings. He gave up only three hits and two walks. He hurled a 3-hit, complete game 5-0 shutout over Western Carolina. Two days later, he hurled 4 perfect innings with 6 strikeouts against N.C. Greensboro.

* 3B Craig Kuzmic, Texas A&M: Belted 5 home runs for the Aggies in four games as he went 9-for-16 on the week. Six of the nine hits went for extra bases. He tied an A&M single-season school record with his 21st homer of the year. * 1B Jeremy Samatas, Coastal Carolina: Hit 5 home runs in five games which included 9 RBI and 22 total bases. He hit three home runs in a doubleheader against Maryland-Baltimore County which included 7 RBI and 4 runs scored. He now has hit 18 HRs on the season.

* 3B T.J. Soto, Louisiana Tech: Tied school and Sun Belt Conference records as he hit three homers in a game against Lamar, the first Bulldog to ever hit three in one game twice. In four games last week, he hit 5 homers with 8 RBI and 7 runs scored.

* RHP Mike Fischer, South Alabama: Came within one strike of history as he pitched a no-hitter for 8 2/3 innings against New Orleans. Mac Harer broke up Fischer's no-hit bid on a 2-ball, 2-strike count. It would have been the first 9-inning no-no in Jaguar history. He won the game, 2-0 with 7 strikeouts and allowed 2 hits and 3 walks.
