College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday, May 25, 1998

MIAMI RANKED NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseball-news.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Miami (Fla.) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll with a 50-10 record.

The Hurricanes, ranked No. 1 for the eighth time this season, are averaging 10.4 runs per game, hitting .340 as a team and have belted 137 home runs (school record). Miami has also stolen 134 bases in 168 attempts while limiting its opposition to only 44 stolen bases in 66 attempts. As far as pitching, the Hurricanes have a 3.82 ERA. The strikeout to walk ratio is amazing as Miami hurlers have fanned 567 batters and walked only 197.

In the Atlantic I Regional, the Hurricanes belted 24 homers in five games. Nine different players for Miami hit homers with seven hitting multiple shots.

POLL NOTES…Two other teams have been red-hot. Florida St. has won 11 of its last 13, including four straight at the Atlantic II Regional. Louisiana St. rolled through the South II Regional unbeaten in four games. Stanford, ranked No. 1 nine times this season, finished poorly the final two weeks of the season with six loses in its final seven games as the Cardinal slipped to ninth this week.

The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

OF Matt Diaz, Florida St.: Diaz put on a remarkable hitting display at the Atlantic II Regional where he was named Most Valuable Player. He belted 7 homers, 5 doubles and knocked in 19 runs. In a game against Oklahoma, he belted four homers to tie an NCAA regional record.

DH Pat Burrell, Miami, Fla.: Burrell put on a show at the Atlantic I Regional with 5 homers and 9 RBI as he went 8-for-19 at the plate. What makes his performance even more amazing is that he had not played for 28 straight games heading into the regional due to an injury to his lower back. In Burrell's first plate appearance in the regional, he hit a towering home run. He added another circuit clout in the same game and cracked three more in the tournament as he was named MVP.

OF Terrmel Sledge, Long Beach St.: Sledge was a 1-man wrecking crew in the West Regional in being named MVP. He was 11-for-22 at the plate with 4 homers and 11 RBI. In the championship game against Alabama, he cracked a key grand slam which staked the 49ers to an early 5-0 lead. Long Beach St. held on to win, 5-3.
