College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: Monday, May 18, 1998

MIAMI RANKED NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseball-news.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — Miami (Fla.) has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll with a 46-9 record.

The Hurricanes, ranked No. 1 for the seventh time this season, are averaging 10.3 runs per game, hitting .340 as a team and have belted 113 home runs. Miami has also stolen 131 bases in 161 attempts while limiting its opposition to only 39 stolen bases in 57 attempts. As far as pitching, the Hurricanes have a 3.88 ERA. The strikeout to walk ratio is amazing as Miami hurlers have fanned 525 batters and walked only 177.

Last week’s No. 1 team, Stanford, lost two straight to Washington in the Pac-10 Conference playoffs as the Huskies claimed their second consecutive Pac-10 championship. Coupled with two straight losses to Southern California prior to that, the Cardinal has now lost four straight.

POLL NOTES…Several other teams have been red-hot. Wichita State has won 16 straight. Washington has won 16 of its last 18. Tulane has won 11 in a row. Minnesota, which won the Big Ten Conference tournament over Illinois, has won 17 of its last 18. Other teams with streaks include Oral Roberts (14 straight), Delaware (10 in a row), and Long Beach St. (11 consecutive). Wake Forest, winners of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, has won 6 of its last 7. Rutgers, champions of the Big East Conference regular season and tournament, have won 29 of its last 34 games.

The "Collegiate Baseball" Newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

RHP Jeff Weaver, Fresno State: Struck out 19 Grand Canyon batters in the opening game of the Western Athletic Conference tournament. The 19 strikeouts is his second highest total ever. He registered 21 against Texas A&M in last year's regionals. He allowed six hits with just one walk. Weaver now has 156 strikeouts on the season and only 37 walks.

RHP Benji Miller, Liberty: Made history when he struck out 20 batters in a 7-3 loss to Coastal Carolina in the Big South tournament. He broke the Liberty, Big South Conference and tournament record for strikeouts in a game. The score was tied 3-3 going into the top of the 11th inning when Miller allowed the eventual winning run to cross the plate before coming out of the game. Miller pitched 10 1/3 innings as he gave up 9 hits, 6 runs, and 3 walks with his 20 strikeouts. He struck out the side twice and had 5 in a row at one point.
