College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: Monday, May 11, 1998

STANFORD RANKED NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. - Stanford has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll with a 41-9-1 record. The Cardinal, which has won 10 of their last 12 games, has been ranked No. 1 for the second consecutive week and the ninth overall this season. Over the past weekend, Stanford split two games with No. 7 Southern California. The Cardinal won the first game, 4-2 but lost the next one, 5-2. The final game of the 3-game series was scheduled for today.

POLL NOTES: Several other teams have been red-hot. Wichita State has won 12 straight contests as has Oral Roberts. Georgia Tech has won 7 of its last 8, including a 3-game sweep of previously No. 10 Clemson. Delaware and Tulane have won seven straight and Texas Tech 6 consecutive. Illinois has won 11 of its last 12 and Minnesota 16 of its last 18.

The "Collegiate Baseball" newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)

 "LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

* RHP Eric Thompson, Ohio State: Fired a 7-inning complete game no-hitter in a 3-0 win over Michigan State. Thompson struck out eight and walked just two. It was the first no-hitter by an OSU pitcher since the 1989 season.

* RHP Nate Bump, Penn State: Struck out a career-high 17 batters to defeat Purdue, 8-1 in a 9 inning contest. The first eight outs Bump recorded were all strikeouts, and he fanned at least one batter in every inning. Bump's performance broke the Penn State and Big Ten Conference single-season records for strikeouts. He now has 124 overall and 74 in 7 conference starts.

* 1B Robb Quinlan, Minnesota: Belted 7 home runs in six games with 13 RBI. He hit homers in four of six games and three in one contest against Northwestern. He now has a Minnesota single-season record 23 home runs on the season.

* SS Chase Utley, UCLA: In four games, Utley cracked 5 home runs with 8 RBI. He hit two home runs against U.C. Santa Barbara. He then homered in the first of a 3-game series against Oregon State. In the final game of the series, he was drilled in the eye by his own foul ball in his first at bat of the game but came back to blast two home runs. A freshman with the Bruins, Utley has cracked 15 homers on the season which is a new school record.
