College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

For Immediate Release: April 27, 1998

MIAMI, FLA. RANKED NO. 1 FOR 6TH CONSECUTIVE WEEK

TUCSON, Ariz. - Miami, Fla. has been ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's latest NCAA Division I baseball poll with a 40-5 record. The Hurricanes, ranked No. 1 for the sixth consecutive week, have won 28 of their last 29 games.  Early last week, Miami tied the school win streak mark by recording its 26th consecutive victory in a 22-3 win over Florida Atlantic.  Miami was then defeated at Georgia Tech., 22-7 to end the streak. However, the Hurricanes bounced back to win the final two games of the series, 8-5 and 9-8. The Hurricanes have hit 90 home runs in 45 games and are six shy of the school record of 96 set in 1982. As far as pitching, the staff has a 2.9:1 strikeout to walk ratio.

POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red-hot outside of Miami. Virginia Commonwealth has won 17 straight, Notre Dame 24 wins in its last 26 games, Cal. St. Fullerton 10 in a row and Rice 8 consecutive. Mississippi State has won 8 of its last 9 while Illinois and Washington have each won six straight contests.

"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

* OF Spencer Oborn, Brigham Young: Had a monster week as he belted 7 home runs with 27 RBI in six games. In addition to being 20-for-27 at the plate, he hit for the cycle twice in two days against Air Force and missed a third consecutive game with a cycle by a triple. At one point, he banged out 11 consecutive hits and raised his batting average from .364 to .420. He had a slugging percentage of 1.087.

* RHP Austin Bilke, Purdue: Threw a no-hitter in the Boilermakers' 1-0 win over Northwestern. The freshman righthander faced 23 Wildcat batters in the 7-inning contest, striking out five and walking three on only 74 pitches. The no-hitter was the first since 1995 for Purdue.

* INF Jason Tidwell, Jacksonville State: Belted 7 home runs in six games and put together a streak of six consecutive games with one or more home runs. He is two games shy of the NCAA Division I record of eight straight games with a home run. He finished the 6-game span with 14 RBI. Tidwell has hit 21 homers on the season with 64 RBI.
