Coach Snow took this “Bird Ball” mentality to LBSU and made them the Dirtbags.

Coach Kincaid’s toughness and professionalism at Cerritos instilled an ethos in its players that has lasted to this day. “Nothing beats being a Bird on a Saturday night…”

Les was particularly skillful at putting the ball in play, one of the three elements Coach constantly reminded his players were necessary for winning baseball games. The other two were throwing strikes and playing catch.

I was fortunate to have red shirted during the 1966, 40-0 team. Coach told me I wasn’t good enough to make the team, but if I wanted to learn baseball, I could stick around and catch batting practice, which I did. Twice I missed practices and he cut me both times, but I didn’t leave. Finally, he let me come back. The next year, I started the first league game, doubled with no one out in second inning. There was a fly ball to right, I went half way and didn’t tag. He let me have it. Next batter, fly ball to left and I tagged. This time he didn’t waste words, just sent in a pinch runner. I only pinch hit the rest of the first round. At the end of the round we lost 3 of 4 games so he gave me another chance, and I got 5 hits in that game. We won out and won the conference by 1 game; I was very fortunate to have played a part in that championship. Coach Kincaid taught more than baseball. I learned that I was responsible for being a good player or bad, so I ended up working harder than the other guy. Ended up having a very good collegiate career via scholarship, and an opportunity to play professionally. It was all because of Coach Kincaid.
