U.C. IRVINE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — U.C. Irvine (43-13) has been ranked No. 1 for the sixth straight time in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll.

The Anteaters, which have won 13 of their last 15 games, captured the Big West Conference with a 22-2 record. U.C. Irvine became only the second team in Big West Conference history to post just two losses. The .916 conference winning percentage is second only to Fresno State's 20-1 mark in 1988.

Over the past week, the Anteaters beat UCLA and then took two of three from U.C. Santa Barbara to close out the regular season.

POLL NOTES: Several other teams are red-hot. Second ranked Louisiana St. captured the Southeastern Conference tournament by winning five of six games. Third ranked Arizona St. won three of four last week with a win over Arizona and two of three against UCLA. Cal. St. Fullerton has won four straight as has Rice. Louisville continues to roll with a 4-1 record in recent action as the Cardinals captured the Big East tournament title. Virginia won four straight in winning the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament crown. Oregon St. won four of its last five games. Teams that fell out of the top 30 include Ohio St. (1-2 last week), Missouri St. (2-1) and George Mason (2-2). New to the poll is Oregon St., Texas A&M and Elon.

The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season.
