"LOUISVILLE SLUGGER'S" FRESHMEN ALL-AMERICAN BASEBALL TEAM

 

TUCSON, Ariz. — The 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American team, selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features a wealth of baseball talent.

 

The team is headed by Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of The Year Carlos Rodon of N.C. State who posted a 9-0 record, 1.61 ERA and fanned 132 batters and Freshman Player of The Year OF Michael Conforto of Oregon St. who hit .349 with 14 doubles, 13 homers and 76 RBI.

 

Here is a rundown on the 2012 Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans.

 

Starting Pitchers

 

LHP Carlos Rodon, N.C. State — Rodon put together an incredible season with a 9-0 record, 1.61 ERA, 132 strikeouts and 41 walks over 111 2/3 innings. He was named a first team Louisville Slugger All-American, Pitcher of The Year in the Atlantic Coast Conference and Freshman of The Year in the ACC. He became the first freshman in ACC history named either Pitcher or Player of The Year. In addition, he became the first N.C. State freshmen baseball player ever to earn first team All-American honors.

 

RHP Preston Morrison, Texas Christian — Morrison was Pitcher of The Year in the Mountain West Conference and a first team league selection. He posted a 9-1 record, 1.98 ERA and struck out 71 batters with 11 walks over 109 1/3 innings.

 

RHP Mike Compton, Florida St. — A second team ACC pick, Compton was 11-2 with a 2.78 ERA for the Seminoles. In 16 starts, he struck out 57 batters and walked 26 over 81 innings.

 

LHP Brandon Leibrandt, Florida St. — Leibrandt was 7-2 with a 2.65 ERA and fanned 74 batters with 25 walks over 88 1/3 innings.

 

LHP Andrew Vasquez, U.C. Santa Barbara — Vasquez was 6-3 with a 1.93 ERA and struck out 104 batters with 63 walks over 88 1/3 innings.

 

RHP Aaron Nola, Louisiana St. — An All-Freshman pick in the SEC, Nola had a 7-4 record, 3.66 ERA and struck out 83 batters with only 7 walks over 83 2/3 innings in 15 starts.

 

RHP Benton Moss, North Carolina — Moss was 7-2 with a 1.94 ERA and struck out 83 batters with 23 walks over 79 innings in 16 starts.

 

LHP Jerry Keel, Cal. St. Northridge — A second team Big West Conference pick and Freshman Pitcher of The Year in the league, Keel was 6-3 with a 2.07 ERA. He fanned 48 batters with 24 walks over 91 1/3 innings in 13 starts and threw two complete games.

 

LHP Sasha Kuebel, Iowa — A second team Big Ten pick and a member of the All-Freshmen team in the league, Kuebel was 6-0 with a 2.67 ERA and fanned 36 batters with 15 walks over 87 2/3 innings and 13 starts.

 

RHP Jared Ruxer, Louisville — Named Rookie of The Year in the Big East Conference, he was 8-3 with a 3.38 ERA and fanned 32 batters with 15 walks over 77 1/3 innings.

 

LHP Johnathan Frebis, Middle Tennessee St. — A second team Sun Belt selection, Frebis was 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA and fanned 61 batters with 36 walks over 81 1/3 innings in 15 starts.

 

RHP Andro Cutura, S.E. Louisiana — Named Freshman of The Year in the Southland Conference, Cutura was 6-1 with a 3.30 ERA. He struck out 38 batters with 16 walks over 76 1/3 innings in 12 starts.

 

RHP Parker French, Texas — Freshman of The Year in the Big 12, French was 6-2 with a 2.84 ERA. He struck out 30 batters with 19 walks over 66 2/3 innings.

 

LHP Jayce Fry, Oregon St. — Fry was 5-3 with a 2.45 ERA and fanned 53 batters with 35 walks over 88 1/3 innings. In 13 starts, he fired three complete games.

 

RHP Jake Reed, Oregon — Reed posted a 7-4 record, 2.93 ERA and fanned 61 batters with 40 walks over 107 1/3 innings in 16 starts.

 

LHP Kyle Kubat, Nebraska — A third team Big Ten selection and a member of the league All-Freshmen team, Kubat was 5-1 with a 2.63 ERA. He struck out 31 batters with 19 walks over 51 1/3 innings.

 

LHP Kris Gardner, Wichita St. — Gardner was 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA and fanned 44 batters with 16 walks over 71 innings in 13 starts.

 

LHP Travis Radke, Portland — Named Freshman of The Year in the West Coast Conference, Radke was 7-4 with a 2.09 ERA. He fanned 85 batters with 29 walks over 86 innings in 14 starts.

 

LHP Zak Sterling, Richmond — Named Rookie of The Year in the Atlantic-10, Sterling was 7-1 with a 2.57 ERA. He struck out 59 batters with 30 walks over 77 innings in 11 starts.

 

LHP Grant Watson, UCLA — Watson posted a 9-2 record with a 4.41 ERA and struck out 44 batters with 31 walks over 85 2/3 innings in 15 starts.

 

RHP Erick Fedde, UNLV — A second team Mountain West pick, Fedde was 6-5 with a 3.59 ERA. He fanned 66 batters and walked 33 over 90 1/3 innings in 15 starts.

 

LHP Jordan Montgomery, South Carolina — Montgomery was 5-1 with a 4.05 ERA and struck out 51 batters with only 9 walks over 66 2/3 innings in 12 starts.

 

RHP Grahamm Wiest, Cal. St. Fullerton — Wiest was 5-5 with a 3.12 ERA and struck out 57 batters with 18 walks over 86 2/3 innings. He started 11 games and threw three complete games.

 

LHP Kenny Mathews, Cal. St. Fullerton — Mathews was 6-2 with a 3.68 ERA and fanned 60 batters with 16 walks over 78 1/3 innings in 14 starts.

 

RHP Koby Gauna, Cal. St. Fullerton — Gauna was 5-3 with a 2.89 ERA and struck out 31 batters with 8 walks over 65 1/3 innings in nine starts.

 

LHP Eric Skoglund, Central Florida — An All-Freshman pick in Conference USA, Skoglund was 5-3 with a 3.21 ERA. He struck out 45 batters with 19 walks over 47 2/3 innings in eight starts.

 

LHP Stephen Tarpley, Southern California — Tarpley was 5-4 with a 3.22 ERA and fanned 67 batters with 29 walks over 78 1/3 innings in 13 starts.

 

RHP Phil Maton, Louisiana Tech. — Maton was 8-5 with a 2.93 ERA and struck out 79 batters with 22 walks over 89 innings in 12 starts.

 

RHP Jamie Nunn, Appalachian St. — An All-Freshman pick in the Southern Conference, Nunn was 5-2 with a 3.88 ERA. He struck out 45 batters with 16 walks over 46 1/3 innings.

 

RHP Devon Stewart, Canisius — Named Rookie of The Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Stewart was 6-4 with a 3.80 ERA and fanned 60 batters with 31 walks over 94 2/3 innings. He started 15 games and threw three complete games.

 

Relief Pitchers

 

Jonathan Holder, Mississippi St. — Holder posted 9 saves and a 0.32 ERA in 28 1/3 innings this season as he was named to the SEC All-Freshmen team. He posted 30 strikeouts and only walked five batters as he appeared in 24 games. The 6-foot-2, 247-pounder set a school record for consecutive scoreless innings at 27 1/3. At one stage, he posted eight saves and a win in 10 appearances.

 

David Berg, UCLA — A first team Pac-12 selection, Berg appeared in 45 games for the Bruins and recorded a 1.71 ERA. He posted a 5-3 record and struck out 54 batters with 16 walks over 63 1/3 innings.

Tyler Burgess, Missouri St. — Named Freshman of The Year in the Missouri Valley Conference, Burgess posted 11 saves and a 5-2 record along with a 2.08 ERA. He struck out 31 batters with 17 walks over 39 innings in 26 appearances.

 

Chad Sobotka, S.C. Upstate — Named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshmen Team, Sobotka posted 12 saves and a 3-0 record to go along with a 1.72 ERA. He fanned 34 batters and walked 16 over 31 1/3 innings in 25 appearances.

 

Bradley Roney, Southern Mississippi — An All-Freshmen Conference USA selection, Bradley posted 11 saves, a 2-1 record and 2.42 ERA. He struck out 26 batters, walked 14 and appeared in 26 innings over 20 games.

 

Mason Marshall, Brigham Young — Marshall was 2-1 with 9 saves and a 2.29 ERA. He struck out 32 batters with eight walks over 39 1/3 innings in 25 appearances.

 

Kellen Urbon, Cornell — The Rookie of The Year in the Ivy League, Urbon posted 9 saves and a 0.50 ERA along with a 3-1 record. He struck out 21 batters in 35 2/3 innings over 21 appearances.

 

Elliott Warford, Furman — An All-Freshmen Southern Conference pick, Warford was 6-0 with 7 saves as he put together a 3.61 ERA. He struck out 36 batters in 52 1/3 innings over 31 appearances.

 

Thomas Olson, Dartmouth — Olson posted 6 saves with a 1.69 ERA as he was named a second team Ivy League selection. He struck out 22 batters with 4 walks over 37 1/3 innings in 17 appearances.

 

Mitch Warner, Gardner-Webb — Warner was 7-2 with a 2.48 ERA in 27 appearances this year. He struck out 52 batters and walked 13 in 58 innings.

 

Joe Goodman, High Point — Goodman was 5-1 with 2 saves and a 2.32 ERA. He struck out 58 batters with 19 walks over 54 1/3 innings in 27 appearances.

 

Brian Clark, Kent St. — Clark was 4-0 with 4 saves with a 0.69 ERA in 26 innings. He struck out 25 batters with 7 walks in 18 appearances.

 

A.J. Ladwig, Wichita St. — Ladwig was 4-1 with 1 save and a 3.14 ERA. He struck out 32 batters with 8 walks in 63 innings over 17 appearances.

 

Reed Reilly, Cal Poly — A first team Big West selection, Reilly was 5-2 with a 2.80 ERA and 1 save. He struck out 45 batters and walked 13 over 54 2/3 innings in 25 appearances.

 

Willie Kuhl, Cal. St. Fullerton — A second team Big West pick, Kuhl posted 34 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings and 14 walks as he posted a 3.51 ERA and 1 save in 17 appearances.

 

Catchers

 

Kyle Schwarber, Indiana — A second team Big Ten pick, Schwarber hit .300 with 15 doubles, 8 homers, 5 triples and 47 RBI.

 

Chase Griffin, Georgia Southern — Freshman of The Year in the Southern Conference, Griffin hit .320 with 10 homers, 10 doubles and 42 RBI.

 

Mark Zagunis, Virginia Tech. — A second team Atlantic Coast Conference pick, Zagunis hit .344 with 13 doubles, 5 homers, 2 triples and 34 RBI. He also swiped 17 of 22 bases.

 

Richard Gonzalez, Alabama St. — A first team Southwestern Athletic Conference pick, Gonzalez hit .292 with 9 doubles, 4 triples and 32 RBI. He also swiped 7 bases.

 

Grayson Greiner, South Carolina — An All-Freshmen pick in the SEC, Greiner hit 12 doubles, 6 homers and knocked in 31 runs for the Gamecocks while playing superb defense.

Sam Travis, Indiana — Named Freshman of The Year in the Big Ten and a second team selection in the league, Travis hit .319 with 17 doubles, 9 homers and 50 RBI.

 

Alex Close, Liberty — The Freshman of The Year in the Big South, Close hit .304 with 14 homers, 8 doubles and 47 RBI.

 

Collin Ferguson, St. Mary’s — Named to the All-Freshmen team in the West Coast Conference, Ferguson hit .315 with 16 doubles, 2 homers and 18 RBI.

 

Michael Katz, William & Mary — An All-Rookie team pick in the Colonial Conference, Katz hit .316 with 10 homers, 10 doubles and 58 RBI.

 

Kewby Meyer, Nevada — A second team Western Athletic Conference selection, Meyer hit .324 with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 1 homer and 34 RBI.

Jason Vosler, Northeastern — Named Rookie of The Year in the Colonial Conference, Vosler hit .312 with 15 doubles, 6 homers, 3 triples and 43 RBI.

 

Pat Kelly, Nebraska — An All-Freshmen pick in the Big Ten, Kelly hit .313 with 8 homers, 6 doubles, 2 triples and 37 RBI.

Austin Cousino, Kentucky — A second team SEC selection and Freshman of The Year in the league, Cousino hit .319 with 20 doubles, 9 homers and 41 RBI. He also swiped 15 of 16 bases.

 

Rhys Hoskins, Sacramento St. — A second team Western Athletic Conference pick, Hoskins hit .353 with 16 doubles, 10 homers and 53 RBI.

 

Ryan Padilla, New Mexico — A second team Mountain West selection, Padilla hit .352 with 19 doubles, 5 homers, 2 triples and 49 RBI.

Greg Mahle, U.C. Santa Barbara — A second team Big West pick, Mahle pitched in 19 games with 4 saves, 3.88 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 46 1/3 innings. As a batter, he hit .347 with 6 doubles and 35 RBI.

 

Jeff Campbell, North Dakota — Named Newcomer of The Year in the Great West Conference, Campbell hit .326 with 14 doubles, 12 homers and 47 RBI. As a pitcher, he started 11 games and threw six complete games with 41 strikeouts in 75 2/3 innings.

 

A.J. Reed, Kentucky — Named to the All-Freshman team in the SEC, Reed hit .300 with 9 doubles, 4 homers and 43 RBI. As a pitcher, he was 5-3 with a 2.52 ERA. He struck out 51 batters with 9 walks over 53 2/3 innings.

 

Mason Robbins, Southern Mississippi — Named Freshman of The Year in Conference USA, Robbins hit .330 with 11 doubles, 5 triples, 3 homers and 38 RBI. As a pitcher, he was 1-0 with a 4.01 ERA and struck out 17 batters in 33 2/3 innings.

 

Reid Roper, Illinois — Roper hit .293 with 9 doubles, 2 triples, 1 homer and 20 RBI. As a pitcher, he was 1-0 with a 4.05 ERA and 3 saves.
