College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (April 20, 2009) U.C. IRVINE NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER POLL TUCSON, Ariz. — U.C. Irvine (26-10) has been ranked No. 1 for the first time this season in Collegiate Baseball newspaper's NCAA Division I baseball poll. The Anteaters, ranked No. 4 in the previous poll, jumped to the top spot after the three teams ahead of them lost two or more games last week, including previously No. 1 ranked Louisiana St. which dropped three games (one to Nicholls St. and two of three to Tennessee at home which has the worst record in the Southeastern Conference at 5-13). Because of those losses, LSU dropped from first to ninth this week as the Tigers also fell to third in the SEC standings. U.C. Irvine, which has won 13 of its last 16 games, swept a 3-game series at U.C. Riverside over the past weekend and is in first place in the Big West Conference with an 11-1 record. POLL NOTES: Seventeen of the 30 teams ranked last week had two or more losses which caused a dramatic shakeup in the poll this week. In fact, only four teams made it through the week unbeaten in Arizona St. (3-0), Georgia Tech. (5-0), Texas (5-0), and Georgia Southern (4-0). Every other team had at least one loss. Teams that fell out of the poll this week included Minnesota (3-2 last week), West Virginia (3-2), Vanderbilt (2-3), Eastern Illinois (3-2) and San Diego St. (1-3). New to the poll this week is Texas A&M (beat Rice last week and swept a 3-game series against Nebraska), Alabama (won 3 straight against Vanderbilt), Ohio St. (won 3 straight at Purdue and first in the Big Ten with a 9-3 record), South Florida (first in the Big East with a 12-3 record) and Missouri St. (first in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 9-2 record and swept a 3-game series against Wichita St.). The Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll is the oldest college baseball poll. Its birth took place during the 1957 college baseball season. (Top 30 Agate Follows)
