MIAMI (FLA.) NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL

TUCSON, Ariz. — The roller coaster ride through the 1999 college baseball season took another sharp turn as Miami, Fla. took over the No. 1 spot in the latest Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll.

Cal. St. Fullerton, ranked No. 1 last week, lost two of three against Long Beach St. as the Titans dropped to fourth this week. Prior to the Long Beach series, Fullerton had won 13 of their last 14 games and clinched the Big West Conference championship.

Miami has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll four times this season. The Hurricanes posted a 4-1 record last week with its only loss being against Notre Dame. But Miami rebounded by sweeping a 3-game series against Winthrop, outscoring the Eagles, 34-5. Five different teams have been ranked No. 1 this season in the Collegiate Baseball poll. The teams include Cal. St. Fullerton, Wichita St., Florida St., Rice and Miami (Fla.).

POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red hot. Florida St. moved from fourth to second this week after winning eight straight. The Seminoles were the only top 10 team from a week ago which made it through the past week unbeaten. Wake Forest has won eight in a row. South Alabama has put together a 10-game winning streak. Ball St. has won 15 of its last 16 games. And Coastal Carolina has won 9 of its last 10 contests.
