College Baseball Poll - Collegiate Baseball Newspaper PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: Monday (May 10, 1999) CAL. ST. FULLERTON NO. 1 IN COLLEGIATE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER (www.baseballnews.com) POLL TUCSON, Ariz. For the first time this season Cal. St. Fullerton has been ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Baseball newspaper poll. The Titans (43-9) have won 13 of their last 14 games and clinched their 17th conference championship over the past weekend with a 3-game sweep at New Mexico St. Cal. St. Fullerton's winning percentage of .827 is better than any previous team at the school except the 1995 national championship squad that finished at .864 (57-9). The Titans are on pace to have the highest batting average and highest scoring average in school history. Through 52 games, Fullerton is hitting .349 and averaging 9.9 runs per game. The Titans have hit 32 home runs in their last 13 games. Last week's No. 1 team, Miami (Fla.), posted a 2-1 record during the last polling period with two wins over Jacksonville and a loss to Florida International. Cal. St. Fullerton becomes the fifth different No. 1 team this season in the Collegiate Baseball poll. Others include: Wichita St., Florida St., Miami (Fla.), and Rice. POLL NOTES: Several teams have been red hot. Ohio State has won 36 of its last 38 games. Oklahoma St. was superb in a 3-game sweep of Texas over the past weekend. The Cowboys started the Big 12 Conference with a 1-5 record. Since that time, OSU has posted a 15-3 record in conference action. Arkansas' 3-game sweep of Mississippi was the Hogs fifth sweep of a 3-game Southeastern Conference series this season. Other teams with substantial winning streaks include: Stanford (9), Houston (9), Ball St. (10), Minnesota (8), and South Alabama (7).
